Pivot Points Trading Strategy for Day Traders
Pivot Points Trading Strategy for Day Traders
Pivot points are one of the oldest and most widely used technical tools for intraday trading. Calculated from the previous day's price data, they provide objective support and resistance levels for the current trading day.
What Are Pivot Points?
Pivot points use the previous day's high, low, and close to calculate key levels for the current day:
Pivot Point (PP) = (High + Low + Close) / 3
From the pivot point, support and resistance levels are derived:
- R1 = (2 x PP) - Low
- S1 = (2 x PP) - High
- R2 = PP + (High - Low)
- S2 = PP - (High - Low)
- R3 = High + 2(PP - Low)
- S3 = Low - 2(High - PP)
Types of Pivot Points
| Type | Calculation | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Floor (Standard) | Classic formula above | General day trading |
| Woodie | Weights the close more | Current day emphasis |
| Camarilla | Tighter levels, more levels | Scalping and range trading |
| Fibonacci | Uses Fibonacci ratios | Precision entries |
| DeMark | Uses open vs close relationship | Trend-biased levels |
Floor Pivot Trading Strategies
Strategy 1: Pivot Point Bounce
- Market opens and price approaches a pivot level (PP, S1, R1, etc.)
- Price touches the level and shows a rejection candle
- Enter in the bounce direction
- Stop loss beyond the pivot level
- Target the next pivot level
Strategy 2: Pivot Point Breakout
- Price consolidates near a pivot level
- A strong candle breaks through the level
- Volume confirms the breakout
- Enter in the breakout direction
- Target the next pivot level
Strategy 3: Pivot Point Trend Day
- Bullish day: Price opens above PP, stays above all morning. Buy pullbacks to R1 (now support). Target R2, R3.
- Bearish day: Price opens below PP, stays below. Sell rallies to S1 (now resistance). Target S2, S3.
- The PP acts as the trend dividing line for the day.
Camarilla Pivot Strategy
Camarilla pivots are tighter and better for scalping:
- Buy: Price drops to S3, enter long with stop at S4, target S1
- Sell: Price rises to R3, enter short with stop at R4, target R1
- Breakout: If price breaks R4, go long. If price breaks S4, go short.
Using Pivots for Intraday Direction
The central pivot point provides the intraday bias:
- Price above PP: Bullish bias for the day. Look for long trades.
- Price below PP: Bearish bias for the day. Look for short trades.
- Price oscillating around PP: Neutral day. Range-trade between S1 and R1.
Combining Pivots with Other Indicators
Pivots + VWAP
- When a pivot level aligns with VWAP, the level is extra strong
- VWAP acts as the trend line; pivots provide specific targets
Pivots + RSI
- RSI overbought at R1 or R2 = likely rejection
- RSI oversold at S1 or S2 = likely bounce
Pivots + Candlestick Patterns
- A hammer at S1 = high-probability long entry
- A shooting star at R1 = high-probability short entry
Pivot Points in Practice
For NIFTY with previous day values: High=24,500, Low=24,200, Close=24,400
- PP = (24,500 + 24,200 + 24,400) / 3 = 24,367
- R1 = (2 x 24,367) - 24,200 = 24,534
- S1 = (2 x 24,367) - 24,500 = 24,234
- R2 = 24,367 + (24,500 - 24,200) = 24,667
- S2 = 24,367 - (24,500 - 24,200) = 24,067
These levels provide the roadmap for the day's trading.
Multi-Day Pivots
- Weekly pivots: Calculated from the previous week's high, low, close. Use for swing trading.
- Monthly pivots: Major support/resistance levels for position trading.
- When daily and weekly pivots align, the level is very significant.
Common Pivot Mistakes
- Expecting exact bounces: Pivots are zones, not exact prices. Allow a small buffer.
- Ignoring the opening: The first 15 minutes of trading set the tone for pivot trading.
- Trading all levels: Focus on the most significant levels (PP, S1, R1) and only use S2/R2 and beyond on trending days.
- Forgetting context: Pivots work best when combined with the overall trend.
Key Takeaways
- Pivot points provide objective, pre-calculated support and resistance for the day
- The central pivot point determines the intraday bullish/bearish bias
- Floor pivots are the standard; Camarilla is better for scalping
- Combine pivots with VWAP, RSI, or candlesticks for higher-probability trades
- Calculate pivots fresh each day using the previous day's data
